The Key Elements of a Sustainable Community
When elected to the Senate, Moses Carey will work for, focus on and promote the key elements of a sustainable community, which includes the Four (4) "E's":
- EDUCATION
- ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
- EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
- ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION
as well as
- HEALTH CARE ACCESS
- AFFORDABLE HOUSING, and
- HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS.
EDUCATION is the foundation upon which all of the other elements of a sustainable community are built. The State of North Caroilina must ensure that:
- Every child has access to early education and developmental experiences to prepare for entry into the public education system.
- All K-12 students meet educational standards that will enable them to compete in a global economy and that adequate funding is provided to all schools
- Community college and university systems provide opportunities for all residents of the State to be trained and educated to excel in a worldwide economy.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT is the engine that injects hope for the future into all communities, large and small, across North Carolina. The State must help:
- Communities develop and maintain the infrastructure needed to attract desirable businesses to fuel their local economies.
- Local governments create an environment that promotes collaborative partnerships to capitalize on collective strengths in competing for new business opportunities.
- Foster opportunities for the inclusion of all population groups in the economic prosperity of the State.
EMPLOYMENT in an occupation or career that pays well is a basic aspiration of most human beings. The State of North Carolina must:
- Promote opportunities for gainful employment in jobs that pay living wages so individuals and their families can live decent lives.
- Assist individuals who have lost jobs due to transitions in industries gain retraining for new jobs.
- Facilitate new job creation through research and demonstration projects focused on new technologies.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION is essential for healthy lifestyles of current and future generations. North Carolina must:
- Promote and support energy conservation and utilization of alternative energy sources.
- Provide incentives to stimulate new markets that contribute to waste reduction, recycling, and alternative energy utilization.
- Provide incentives for regional and inter-local partnerships to stimulate watershed protection, energy conservation, waste reduction, and recycling.
- Invest in protection of historic, cultural, and sensitive environmental resources through local and statewide public and private entities.
HEALTH CARE ACCESS is critical for the overall well being of the residents of North Carolina. The State must:
- Improve access to high quality health care for all persons without regard to ability to pay.
- Take a leadership role in making health insurance affordable and accessible for all residents of the State.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING is key for maintaining stability of families and avoiding homelessness. North Carolina must support initiatives that foster the availability of housing that is within the price range of all residents of the State.
HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS are cornerstones of a democracy. North Carolina must protect and ensure the rights of all persons to gain a high quality education, secure employment that pay living wages, live in a clean environment, access adequate health care, and secure homes.
